Choosing a Safe & Secure Door for Your Home

When choosing exterior doors, it’s definitely important to think about home security, not just looks.

What type of door would be hardest to break down? Are there windows within or alongside the door that could easily be broken, allowing a burglar to reach in and access the lock? Are the locks built with high grade steel or something cheaper?

Let’s take a look at what you should look for in a door to ensure it won’t be easy for a thief to bypass.

Door Material

It’s a common assumption that steel or fiberglass doors are more secure (harder to break down) than a wood door, but this isn’t actually what we need to worry about. It’s not the door but the latch-side jamb that is the weak link in any exterior door. A forceful kick can split the jamb without actually damaging the door itself.

To prevent someone from damaging the jamb, install an extra-long security strike plate. Sink three inch screws into the neighboring stud.

Door Thickness

While the jamb may be the weakest link, that doesn’t mean the door itself shouldn’t be stout. Choose a beefy 1 3/4th inch thick door over the standard 1 3/8th inch models. These thicker doors still accept standard locksets (if you go thicker, you’ll need a special lock and bigger hinges).

Glass

Many homeowners find a glass window in or beside a door attractive and also appreciate the natural light it allows in. Choosing a door with regular window glass or even tempered glass makes a tempting target for burglars though, since these types of windows can be broken, allowing access to the lock.

Instead choose a hurricane-rated glass. These types of windows feature an unbreakable inner plastic layer.

Updates and Our New Security System.

There is a lot to tell. The last week has been very busy. After learning about the children's socks, we had planned to do something about the sock situation. Thanks to a donation from a friend, we bought all of the kids TWO new pair of socks (making three total)! The house parents were shocked at this blessing. The donation also provided a new pair of nice tennis shoes for each of the kids and belts for the boys. They can now walk to school without having to hold up their pants with one hand. It felt like Christmas when we delivered the gifts to the kids. They were so appreciative. Mario (house dad) told me, "Thank you for buying these kids their first-ever pair of 'nice' tennis shoes."

Last Friday, we had a dedication here for a bakery. Equipment was donated from the Rotary Club of Asuncion to create a state of the art bakery. The older children in the home and community will be trained in the art of bread-making and the proceeds from the bread will help to support the bakery classes and the children's home. And of course, the children's home will be provided with fresh, delicious bread. The story was covered by a Paraguayan newspaper, and Shaun and I were mentioned as the home directors. Even after writing our names myself for the reporter, Shaun's name was spelled Sahun. That made the article even more entertaining to read.

Inauguration of the Panaderia (Bakery)

Today I spoke with the director of the community school where the children from the home attend. He confirmed that I (Sara) would be teaching English to all seven of the grades. I will only be doing classes one day a week to begin. Tomorrow I go to meet the students and to be introduced. Next Tuesday, classes will begin. Please pray for me. I have not done much formal in-school instruction. Also I will be teaching in Spanish. Pray that the Lord would guide me and help me to be creative in my approach.

Some may see the beacon at the top of the Empire State Building as a mere cherry on a famous architectural sundae, but the lamp means serious business. Since the flashing light is used to help guide planes, building officials must call the Federal Aviation Administration if it ever goes dark. Electrician Tom Silliman, from Chandler, Indiana, is one of the handful of men who have changed the light perched 1,453 feet above the Big Apple.

"I am an electrical engineer and a qualified climber. These two things usually don't go together, and because I have both, I do a lot of unique projects," says Silliman, 63. Deep below Tokyo's financial district, the Pasona Group, an international employment agency, has flipped the switch on a stunning experiment in urban agriculture. The company converted a bank vault in the subbasement of its headquarters into a series of supersized greenhouses, all bathed in the glow of computer-controlled grow lamps. Pasona O2, as the project is known, was launched to pique interest in new methods of farming—and to generate future employment opportunities in an island nation largely dependent on others for its food. For now the subterranean gardens are still more a showpiece than a serious producer, since they yield only 132 pounds of rice a year.

If you've got sticky fingers, stay away from cops bearing lamps. SmartWater, a new security system that combines liquid and light, has proved useful to banks, museums, and corporations in England and is now alighting on our shores. How it works: Clients are assigned a chemically coded liquid that's released if a would-be thief gets too close to any protected items. The liquid leaves a residue that can be detected on skin for up to eight weeks under a handheld UV light, which is supplied to police by the company.

The children of Lovozero, Russia, a small reindeer-herding town north of the Arctic Circle, are lucky to see three hours of sunlight a day during the midwinter months. The shortage of natural light means not only limited playtime. Kids also miss out on bone-strengthening vitamin D, produced when the body is exposed to the sun's rays. UV-light treatments similar to the one being given to these goggle-protected Lovozero tots have been used for decades in areas that experience lengthy spells with little or no daylight. In addition to boosting calcium absorption, such sunlamps have been used to treat maladies such as jaundice, psoriasis, and rickets.

A new staff security system

a powerful new security system called Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC) became fully operational at 29 Canadian airports. Biometric security cards issued to 100,000 employees are said to be the first in the world to contain two biometrics references ? fingerprint and iris ? and also deployed on a national scale. The Winnipeg Airport Authority, with about 5,000 card holders, was one of the first to be RAIC-compliant. The new cards, says Mike O’Gorman, the airport’s Vice President of Operations, “proves that the person who has the card is the person who should have the card. And from the airport’s point of view, it offers better customer service. We want the ability for the staff to move back and forth between restricted areas easily and with a high level of security.” With the Restricted Access Pass (RAP), which RAIC replaced, employees occasionally found themselves in line-ups up at doors, with guards checking cards against written lists of authorized persons. Moreover, RAP has two cards, on that employees presented to the guards, and the second, which they swiped; the two were on different access systems. With RAIC, and its single access system, says Mr. O’Gorman: “The same way you can grant access, you can deny access just as fast.”

IndigoVision doubles sales for third consecutive year

Narita Airport Begins New Security System

This week, Japan’s Narita Airport began a new immigration security system that requires non-Japanese to have their fingerprints scanned and photos captured. Apparently, the time spent for each person was often over an hour as compared to the previous 15 to 20 minute wait. Tested by Justice Minister Hatoyama, there were a few bugs in the system, including one of the machine’s locking up and its cams not being able to photograph those who were on the tall side. Once the kinks are worked out, we expect that Big Brother will be watching in other airports as well.
